Senior Gardening Day

Senior Gardening Day at Portland Nursery on Division has become a yearly event for us. In 2007, for the third year in a row, Legacy Health System Horticultural Therapy Department, Home Instead and Portland Nursery came together to provide a day of hands-on activities and demonstrations geared especially for the elder gardeners in our community.

Refreshments and plenty of seating are provided, areas of activity are covered so the weather can be fair or foul and the day proceeds with everyone having a great time! In addition to activities, there are special sales and discount coupons for seniors, and there are volunteers and nursery staff on hand to assist with shopping.

During the day we provide gardening demonstrations, tours of the nursery, door prize drawings, senior discounts, and music from a favorite local band.

Everyone is invited including seniors and their families, individuals and facilities serving seniors.

This has become a much-anticipated event; groups from various assisted living facilities and senior centers in the area have reserved special field trips to attend and individuals come on their own or with family or friends. It is a day of crafts, learning, remembering and camaraderie.
