Attracting Hummingbirds

For Hummingbirds

Attracting Hummingbirds to your Garden

We have a special table set up at our Stark location about everything you need to attract and keep hummingbirds in your garden. We have plants and feeders that will keep them coming back.

The Anna’s Hummingbird is a year-round resident here, west of the Cascades, and when the weather warms the Rufous Hummingbird visits our area. With a little planning, you can be sure to provide something in bloom for these delightful birds throughout the season. Read about attracting hummingbirds with natives.

You can also find our brochure Perennials that attract hummingbirds and the brochure Attracting Birds on our brochure page.

Portland Nursery Volunteers in Your Community

June Oregon Food Bank

In the Community

There are many opportunities for our staff to participate in community projects. Giving tours of the nursery to school class field trips; teaching a workshop or giving a talk to gardening groups; helping a preschool class plant colorful annuals in baby shoes during a summertime celebration. These are just a few of the many ways individual staff members give their time, energy and knowledge back to the community.

I recently got an email from Genny, at our Division St. location: “You sent over a flyer awhile ago for volunteering at the Oregon Food Bank. I’ve just started doing it and I’m SO EXCITED! It’s going to be totally awesome…”

Genny’s enthusiasm was engaging, and so I asked if she would be willing to write a bit each week about her time at the OFB Learning Garden. She agreed, and we want to share with you her experience of gardening as a helping act in the community. - Peggy Acott.

Cultivating Community at the Oregon Food Bank Community Garden

I volunteer at  the Oregon Food Bank in the community garden.  It’s a program called Cultivating Community and we work with different youth groups to help everyone learn about growing food.  Rebecca organizes the program and brings wonderful energy to the activities.  We meet with a group of young women from the De Paul treatment center, and all work together to make amazing things happen in the garden!

The few times I’ve gone we’ve harvested asparagus, planted and trellised beans, and collected eggs from the chickens.  Oh, the chickens!  They are by far the most exciting part of the garden visit for the young ladies.  Their curiosity and tenderness as they handle the chickens is delightful to watch.

Unfortunately, the weather hasn’t been cooperating lately and we’ve had to find some indoor activities.  Touring the warehouse is a fascinating trip!  The amount of food that passes through those doors, and all of the sorting and organizing, is incredible!

I learn something new every time I go (sometimes many new things).  And I can hardly wait to find out what it’s going to be this week!
