When it comes to growing food, Portland Nursery is the place to shop! During spring, shipments of fresh plants arrive daily. Whether you have a small deck or an acre, our selection of organic and conventional veggies and herbs is sure to please.
Local growers provide us with popular favorite types as well as heirloom varieties, and new, unique products such as Believe It or Not Vegetables from Log House Plants. Additional variety information and growing tips are provided in the side panel.
Our Veggie Calendar is indispensable for planning your garden through the year. Our veggie year begins with asparagus crowns in January. Typically our first brassicas, peas and lettuce arrive in late February along with potato tubers. In the first or second week of April we begin to stock tomatoes on our greenhouse.
Did you know that tomatoes, peppers and eggplants are stunted by temperatures below 55°F? For that reason, don’t forget your Wall-of-Water, row cover or plastic mulch so you can get in an early crop. Otherwise, wait until the first week of May to put out your Solanums.
At this time, cucurbits, corn and other warm season veggies can go in the ground too. Winter crops such as brussels sprouts and cauliflower should go in around mid to late July. We round out our veggie season with fall greens, garlic and shallots in September and October.
We carry a broad selection of herbs 12 months out of the year. Our first basil and cilantro arrive around the first of April. We carry up to twenty varieties of rosemary and even more varieties of lavender. See our Lavandula Brochure.
We also strive to carry some culinary delicacies such as chervil, stevia and epazote. We stock medicinal herbs such as calendula, marshmallow and motherwort. Many plants used for medicine may be among our other areas such as green tea (Camellia sinensis) is in our shade shrubs, Oregon Grape (Mahonia nervosa) is in our Northwest native section and Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is in our tall shrubs for sun.
